The Olympic motto is: “higher, faster, stronger.” The motto of “higher” refers to such sports as high jumping and pole vault. The “faster” refers to the timed events such as track running, swimming, cycling, and others. The “stronger” in the motto refers to such sports as weight lifting. Stair climbing athletes are racing “higher” to the top of some of the tallest buildings and towers in the world. Stair climbing races are timed events and thus, meets the “faster” motto as well. The muscular strength that is required to make the top, especially in the legs, meets the “stronger” portion of the Olympic motto.

Stair climbing is one of the few sports that meets all three words of the Olympic motto.

At almost every Olympics there is at least one new sport added to the offiicial list of sporting events. In recent Olympics, new sports have been added, including, Tae Kwon Do, triathlon, and mountain biking. Therefore, the International Olympic Committee is not necessarily opposed to change or additions.

Stair climbing races are usually started with a staggered start system, with athletes starting and ending at different times, a sort of “time-trial.” This is similar to the time-trial events in Olympic cycling. Many races have live video feeds to an area in the building where spectators and the media can cover the event.
